A Note, Not a Chapter

This week is different, and it’s worth saying so plainly before anything else.

There is no chapter this week. The Harlow County File pauses, on purpose, and picks back up next Saturday exactly where it left off. This square isn’t evidence in a story. It’s not tied to any case, real or invented.

Cold case work exists because someone is still waiting. Not for a plot to resolve. For an answer. Sometimes that wait runs years. Sometimes decades. The families at the center of it don’t get a next chapter on a schedule; they get whatever the record eventually gives up, if it gives up anything at all. Every method this program uses in its fiction, requesting the document instead of accepting the summary, checking the date twice, refusing to tidy up an answer that doesn’t actually resolve, comes from real practice, because that discipline is what the people still waiting are owed.

This square is for whoever you’re holding in mind this week. That’s not for me to guess at or name. Make it in whatever color feels right, not necessarily the program’s usual palette. Set it aside from the others if you want, or fold it in like any other week. Either way is correct.

Next Saturday, the file reopens.

This Week’s Square

A classic granny square, worked in soft, muted tones rather than the program’s usual navy and magenta, with a simple looped ribbon appliqued at center. This is the gentlest build in the program: no chart, no colorwork, no computed geometry, just rounds worked steadily until the square is finished.

Materials and Gauge

YarnWorsted weight (#4 medium). A soft parchment cream or dove grey for the granny rounds, approximately 40 yards. Navy for the transition/joining round, approximately 10 yards, to keep this square’s edge consistent with the rest of the blanket. A small amount of a muted contrast color for the ribbon, dusty rose or soft grey, under 5 yards.
Hook4.0 mm (US G/6), the program gauge hook.
NotionsTapestry needle.
Finished sizeApproximately 8 by 8 inches after the transition round, matching every other square.
Skill levelBeginner friendly. Classic granny square construction, familiar to most crocheters, with no new technique.
On the colors. Every other square in this program uses the same eight color palette. This one doesn’t have to. If a different color feels more right for what this square means to you, use it. The transition round can still be worked in navy to keep the edge consistent for joining, or in your own chosen color if you’d rather this square stand apart entirely. Both are correct.

The Pattern

Part 1 · Granny Rounds (soft parchment or dove grey)
Rnd 1
Ch 4, join with a sl st to form a ring. Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc in ring, ch 2, [3 dc in ring, ch 2] three times, join with a sl st to top of ch 3. (4 corner groups of 3 dc)
Rnd 2
Sl st into next ch 2 space. Ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc all in same space (corner made), ch 1, [in next ch 2 space: 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1] three times, join. (4 corners, each now two clusters of 3 dc)
Rnds 3 to 7
Continue in established granny pattern: in each corner ch 2 space, work 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc; in each side ch 1 space, work 3 dc; ch 1 between every cluster. Each round adds one more 3 dc cluster to every side. After Round 7, the square should measure approximately 8 inches across before blocking.
Part 2 · Transition Round (navy, or your chosen color)
Transition
With navy (or your own choice), work sc evenly across each side of the granny square, 32 sc per side, working through the tops of the dc clusters and across the chain spaces as needed to distribute evenly. Work 3 sc in each corner space. Join with a sl st and fasten off. (140 sc total) This brings the square to the same edge every other week uses, ready to join into the blanket.
Part 3 · Ribbon Applique
Strip
With your contrast color, ch 6. Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and across (5 sc). Rows 2 to 30: ch 1, turn, sc across (5 sc). Fasten off. Strip measures about 1.25 by 6.7 inches.
Shape
Fold the strip into a loop: bring the two ends toward the center from opposite directions, overlapping slightly, so the middle third forms a loop and the two end thirds hang below as tails. Tack the loop’s crossing point together with a few stitches.
Attach
Center the ribbon on the square and sew it down through the loop’s crossing point only, letting the two tails hang naturally rather than pinning them flat. Trim the tail ends straight, or angle them slightly for a more finished look.
