The 2026 Clutch Blanket Mystery, Week 04: The Evidence Folder Square

The Marsh folder came out of the vault at nine sharp, and June had it open on her desk before the annex clerk finished his coffee two buildings away.

The case number on the tab read what she expected. The case number on a small sticker in the folder’s upper right corner, the kind of adhesive relabel tag used when a filing system changed formats, read something else entirely: 93-0466. She recognized it before she looked it up, because she had already spent a week with tag 1147, and 93-0466 was the Kessler burglary, the same case whose property log had swallowed the missing magnifying glass.

Two case numbers on one folder. Not a coincidence stacked on a coincidence; a seam. Somewhere in this county’s paperwork, the Marsh file and the Kessler file had been close enough to touch, close enough that a sticker meant to fix one filing error had accidentally preserved evidence of another.

She went through the folder page by page after that, slower than procedure required and exactly as slow as she needed. Near the back, in a sleeve meant for photographs, she found a latent print card instead. The numbering sequence stamped along its edge did not match Marsh’s case number. It did not match Kessler’s either. It matched nothing she had seen yet, which was its own kind of information: a third file, uncounted, sitting inside the folder of a fourth.

She did not touch the card beyond photographing it in the sleeve exactly as found. Some things you read. Some things you leave for whoever comes to the evidence properly, with gloves and a chain of custody form, rather than a records clerk running on her lunch break and a growing certainty that this had stopped being about one drowning several boxes ago.

She wrote the sticker’s case number on a fresh index card and pinned it to the map, third pin now, and looked at the spiral pattern worn into the print card’s ridges for longer than the task strictly required.
