This is week one of the 2026 Clutch Blanket Mystery, a free twenty week crochet along from Clutch Justice. Each Saturday through December 12 brings one free 8 inch square pattern and one chapter of The Harlow County File, a clearly labeled work of serialized fiction. This week: the Magnifying Glass Square, a navy base with an applique brass lens, and Chapter One, in which a records clerk reads a date three times. All square math is validated before publication, and every square in the program finishes with the same 140 stitch joining round so the blanket assembles without surprises.
The square is an 8 by 8 inch solid navy base at the series gauge, with the magnifying glass built as applique: an ice blue lens disc, a brass bezel round, a handle strip, and one white glint stitch line.
Every square in this program, whatever its construction method, ends with an identical 140 stitch navy joining round. That uniform edge is what lets twenty different squares become one flat blanket in May.
The story is fiction, labeled as fiction on every installment. The evidence item in each chapter becomes the next week’s square, so the crochet along and the mystery advance together.

The digitization project reached Box 47 on the first Monday of January. June Okafor logged it in at 8:14 a.m. the way she had logged in the previous forty six: case number, box condition, seal status, shelf position. The label read MARSH, E., 1994. The seal was intact. The box was lighter than it looked.
The Marsh file was a closed accidental drowning, six weeks from report to finding, thirty three years old. June scanned the incident summary, the finding memo, and the evidence inventory in the order the folder offered them, because order is information too. The inventory listed eleven items of personal effects recovered. Item nine was a brass magnifying glass, property tag 1147, logged into evidence in April 1994.
She would not have checked the tag register at all except that 1147 was the year her building was supposedly founded, according to a plaque in the lobby that everyone agreed was wrong. The register showed tag 1147 assigned to a brass magnifying glass, entered 1993, disposition: released to family, December 1993.
June read the two entries three times. Dates do not care how many times you read them. An item released in December 1993 does not get recovered from a riverbank in April 1994, not without paperwork that was not in the folder, and the folder was the kind that would have kept it.
She did not write a conclusion, because she did not have one. She wrote what she had: two entries, one tag, thirteen months apart, and photographed both pages with the ruler in frame. Then she walked to the archive map on the office wall and pressed a pushpin into the shelf position of Box 47, so that whatever this was, it would at least stay findable.
This Week’s Evidence: The Magnifying Glass Square
Chapter One turns on an item that appears twice in the record, so week one’s square is the item: a brass magnifying glass, appliqued on navy, the close read rendered in yarn. If you made Pattern No. 05, the plush magnifier, you will recognize the anatomy at flat scale. If you did not, none of it is assumed.

Square Notes
The navy base is deliberately the plainest fabric in the program, because week one is the gauge trial for everything that follows. If your square finishes under 7.75 inches, go up a hook size for the base and keep the 4.0 mm for applique; over 8.25, go down. Settle the question now, in week one, on the easiest square, rather than in week eleven on a colorwork chart. The record you establish this week governs the file.
