Unfortunately, your editor has had her fair share of malignant narcissists who are willing to lie to people to make a point or punch down. So even though it seems like it’s common sense to say this, today, it’s worth explaining and documenting that filing false police reports is a crime in Michigan.

Lying to cops isn’t victimless or harmless.

In Michigan, it’s not “harmless revenge” or “a misunderstanding” or even “a moment of panic.” It’s a crime with real consequences.

And yes: if you knowingly make up a crime, you can face felony charges.

The Law: Michigan’s MCL 750.411a

Michigan law draws a clear line between dishonesty and criminal liability:

False report of a misdemeanor: misdemeanor offense Up to 93 days jail or a $500 fine or both

False report of a felony: felony offense Up to 4 years in prison or a $2,000 fine or both

Lying about a medical emergency: yep, misdemeanor again.

But wait…there’s more: If your false call triggers a response that causes injury, serious impairment, or death, the punishment scales up:

  • Injury ? up to 5 years or $20K fine
  • Serious impairment ? up to 10 years or $25K fine Death ? up to 15 years or $25K–$50K fine

Why This Matters: It’s About More Than Truth

Here’s the harsh truth: when false reports hit the system, they do more than clog 911 lines. They waste police resources, endanger lives, and destroy trust.

Michigan is even tightening the screws on “swatting”, hoax terror calls that spark SWAT raids. Proposed bills now make it a 4-year felony, even if no one responds. And penalties jump if people get hurt.

If you are dealing with someone with a history of making false reports, it’s even more important to be proactive with your local police department, and the one in their jurisdiction, too, to keep yourself safe.

The Takeaway

Filing a false police report isn’t a harmless spoof; it’s a crime with escalating consequences. In Michigan, you could find yourself facing years behind bars or an expensive fine. And if someone gets hurt, or worse, the punishment is lethal serious.

This isn’t just about law enforcement; it’s societal stability. When trust fails, everyone loses.

If someone is attempting to put you in this situation, stay calm. If you’ve kept receipts up to this point, you’re more than ready to share your truth and keep yourself safe.
