The race to be Kalamazoo’s next mayor has officially begun.
On the heels of MLive’s published feature, Kalamazoo Mayoral Candidate Robert Gray is hosting a meet and greet, complete with free hot dogs, chips, juice, and water, this Friday, October 3rd from at the Citgo Station on the corner of Portage Street and E. Stockbridge Street.
The event is framed not as a campaign rally but as an informal way to meet the candidate, share a meal, and talk about the issues facing Kalamazoo. Such events have become a hallmark of Gray’s campaign, reflecting his belief that leaders should show up in person and meet people where they are.
There is no cost to attend. Residents can stop by to grab a bite, chat with Gray about his platform and learn more about his solutions for gun violence, homelessness and housing.
While his opponents have rolled out more traditional campaign stops and fundraising appeals, Gray’s community cookouts are an extension of his belief that the city’s biggest problems can’t be solved without first building trust with those most affected.
By offering food and conversation on a neighborhood corner rather than a formal campaign venue, Gray hopes to signal that everyone is welcome in his movement, whether they plan to vote for him or not.
An Invitation to the Community
Whether you’re curious about the mayoral race, have concerns about housing or public safety, or simply want a free snack and some conversation, Gray’s event promises an informal, welcoming environment.
In a race where policy statements often get lost in political rhetoric, this is an opportunity to speak directly with a candidate who believes that listening is just as important as campaigning.
Bring your questions, your appetite and your neighbors to the Citgo on the Corner of Portage and E. Stockbridge Street this Friday, October 3rd.
