If Michigan was Wal-Mart, House Republicans would be killin’ it with their rollbacks.

Because in Lansing, the Republican-controlled Michigan House isn’t busy fixing roads, lowering costs, or protecting rights.

Instead, they’re busy figuring out how to throw protesters in jail.

The latest proposal? Make it a misdemeanor, punishable by up to 90 days behind bars, to participate in a street protest without a government-issued permit.

And I wouldn’t at all be surprised if they simultaneously make it impossible to obtain that permit.

That’s not public safety. That’s criminalizing dissent.

It’s part of a disturbing trend: more bills aimed at silencing people than at solving problems. And while the House spends its time drafting laws to curb constitutional rights, what have they actually accomplished for everyday Michiganders?

Nothing.

This has to be the biggest crock I have read and this house session has done some screwed up stuff.

This House Session Has Set a Record for Inaction

The House is sitting on its hands… unless it’s moving to roll back freedoms and deny children from having free lunch.

Do any of these idiots realize that this may be the only meal some kids get? What happens when you’re hungry? It puts kids in a position to steal to survive. Who comes calling when you steal? Cops.

Hello, school-to-prison pipeline.

Nope, instead, they would rather block FOIA Reform and keep us in the dark about their nonsense and lobbying and how they benefit from mass incarceration.

Thanks, Fellas.

If your legislature’s biggest idea is less liberty and more smoke and mirrors, that’s not governing.

It’s obstructing.

Obstructing is a charge normal folks have to deal with everyday. But our politicians get away with it.

This terrible plan also puts law enforcement in harms way, because you know your politician isn’t going to be out on the front lines of a protest. Nope, they’ll be using human shields.

It’s proof that when those in power fear the people, the first thing they attack is your right to be heard.

They know they are under-performing and they want to remove any and all accountability or right to redress government.

Today at the Reentry United Conference, Michigan DOC officials discussed how they have worked hard to get Michigan to its lowest recidivism rate in state history; and apparently the House wants to drive that number right back up.

No, thank you. I want none of that BS you’re selling, Lansing.

What You Can Do About It

  • Contact your State Rep – Call, email, hire a sky writer, whatever floats your boat, and demand they oppose this bill. Tell them your vote depends on how they protect First Amendment rights.
  • Show up – Attend committee hearings and House sessions when this bill is on the agenda. Public presence makes lawmakers nervous in the best way.
  • Organize locally – Partner with advocacy groups, unions, and community coalitions to keep protests legal and accessible. Tap into the Michigan ACLU and see how you can help.
  • Use the press – The pen is mightier than the sword. Write letters to the editor and op-eds calling out the proposal for what it is: an assault on free speech.
  • Vote them out – Track your representative’s record. If they back this bill, remember it in November.

Pulling It Together.

Rights erode when we treat bad bills like political theater.

This isn’t just Lansing drama; it’s a test of whether Michiganders will defend their ability to speak, march, and demand better from their government.
