Recently, Prison Policy Initiative published a thought-provoking piece on prison disciplinary measures and their backward results.

Penned by Brian Nam-Sonenstein and Nell Haney, Bad Behavior: How prison disciplinary policies manufacture misconduct outlines rules that set incarcerated individuals up to fail, the pitfalls in the probation system, and how non-threatening behaviors can be counted as misconduct.

Michigan has a lot to work on.

  • You may remember how here in Michigan, visits can be revoked for misconduct, even though data demonstrates that visits are vital to mental health and prevent misconduct.
  • Depending on the type of misconduct, Michigan also may require solitary confinement while a misconduct hearing is pending. This is incredibly harmful; solitary confinement is torture and should NOT be forced on anyone.
  • Like many states, people who need substance abuse treatment are often hit with infractions rather than offered help.

It all adds up to fines and infractions that make it harder for people to go home.
