After The Diary Case Library

Editorial note: After the Diary is an independent journalistic project produced by Clutch Justice. It is not affiliated with, authorized by, or produced in cooperation with the estate of Michelle McNamara, Patton Oswalt, HBO, or the publishers of I’ll Be Gone in the Dark.
Every case in After the Diary, in one place: what Michelle McNamara wrote, what has happened since, how well each fact has been checked, and where the installment lives. This is a working inventory, not the complete True Crime Diary archive.

How To Read The Verification Tiers

Confirmed: the outcome was checked against several independent reports.

Documented: the outcome is widely reported, but the original True Crime Diary post has not been located or re-read.

Needs checking: a specific claim, such as authorship, a date, or an agency statement, has to be verified before an installment relies on it.

Quick FAQ
What is the After the Diary case library?

A reference to every case in the series: what Michelle McNamara wrote, what has happened since, how well each fact has been verified, and which installment covers it.

Are all of these cases from True Crime Diary?

Most are. Each entry names its source, and a few come from her magazine work or from guest posts on her site, so they are labeled rather than credited to her blog.

What do the verification tiers mean?

Confirmed means checked against multiple independent reports. Documented means widely reported but the original post is unlocated. Needs checking means a specific claim must be verified first.

Will the library be updated?

Yes. Statuses change as cases develop, and each installment notes when something has moved.

Case outcomes are drawn from the sourcing in each installment and from the series verification tracker. Where an entry says the original True Crime Diary post was not located, the post’s existence and subject are corroborated by secondary reporting, and the page will be updated as direct archive copies are confirmed.
